Health classes explained

Understanding Super Preferred, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard: what each category represents and what determines movement between levels.

Insurers establish premium rates by rate class. While names fluctuate, the structure stays consistent: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred, Preferred Best in some carriers), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then table adjustments for above-standard risk. Tobacco applicants occupy a parallel scale at higher premiums.

What underwriters look at

Physical measurements and weight-to-height ratio, blood pressure and cholesterol numbers, family cardiac or cancer history before age 60, license and tickets, medication fill history, profession and interests, and nicotine use. Peak classifications require clean results across virtually all measures; Preferred allows minor deviation; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate controlled issues like managed high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

The health input asks for candor: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very Good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, Fair to Standard. Your quote reflects that choice; the insurer finalizes the tier after review. If unsure, obtain quotes for two tiers and compare; the application finishes the picture. An overstated tier doesn't reduce the eventual rate; it only skews the forecast.

Susman Insurance Agency can assist in finding carriers whose guidelines align better with your unique situation, which regularly outweighs initial rate comparison.
